It is never easy to say good-bye, particuIarly when there’s no advanced warning.

I saw an image post this week. It read “Be the things you loved most about the people who are gone.” I couldn’t help but see this as a clear message regarding last week’s terrible loss of our Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan.

She was many things to our area but through her career she was an untiring voice for the voiceless. She helped countless working families, children, senior citizens, and other populations who are often cast aside or forgotten about. As we mourn her loss personally and the work that was so dear to her, I invite you to continue her mission. Take care of those who are unable to take care of themselves. Be their voice. Be their hero and do it like she did–in a tireless way without thought to personal gain.

Be the things you loved most about her calling. She is leaving a large spot in our community. Let’s continue the work that she held so dear.

Be kind to one another and help amplify the voices of those who need it most.
